When Catskill Art Supply moved from its cramped Stockade digs to a 5,000-square-foot space in the Kingston Plaza, the region’s art community rejoiced. What had already been the biggest, widest, and deepest array of art supplies around had just gained 1,000 square feet.
Since its Woodstock founding in 1978, the business has excelled at serving up “everything to do with art” to local creatives, providing vast variety. Paints and inks and all the things you can put them on. All the tools you use in the process. Clay and molds and glazes and delicate carving and shaping implements. Paper in near-infinite varieties, frames and easels and textiles and…You get the idea. It’s a lot.
Painting, drawing, sculpting, airbrushing, digital art, calligraphy, silk-screening, origami—there are so many pathways to enchantment here.
With a thousand more square feet to play with, virtually unlimited free parking, and four decades of growing the business based on what our area’s makers and dreamers wanted most to (ahem) draw on, the store had room to grow. New paints, brushes, and types of canvas were added to that already robust inventory, in a clean, bright, upbeat space that’s easy to navigate and explore. Services you’ll find here include large-format copying, meaning you can make copies of your poster idea or engineering plans, framing for your latest work or that print you thrifted, or inspiration that can help you discover a whole new side of yourself. Think about the wrapping paper project we share here. Then think about how many other surfaces you can print on and with, in a near-infinite range of designs and colors. Ever since somebody picked up a sharp rock and made lines on another rock, we humans have been finding glorious ways to exponentially multiply the possibilities.

And the possibilities exponentially multiply the depth and breadth of our souls in return: making art in any form reduces stress hormones, boosts mood, helps us process every flavor of chronic ache, and literally builds new neural pathways. No wonder the mood at Catskill Art Supply tends toward exuberance. At this writing, they’re announcing that fluorescent oil paints have arrived. Imagine the possibilities. It doesn’t matter if you’re a seasoned artist or have never tried any art at all. They’ve got everything from beginner-level tools and helpful tips to that esoteric item you’ve despaired of finding.
And there is a cornucopia of things that are just straight up fun. puzzles of masterworks, stickers galore, games, a hand-cranked music box, pins, iron-on patches, temporary tattoo markers, wall decor, glowing colored lights, rainbow twirlers, and glitter body art kits. It’s hard to imagine the case of cabin fever or dark-season blues that could survive a Catskill Art Supply run. Stop in. Find things for people you love, yourself included, and enjoy the journey.
