Now enjoying summer season “in full bloom,” Tulip Gallery presents an evening with British photographer Dudley Reed, in his first Hudson Valley show on Saturday, August 8th, with artist’s talk at 6 p.m.

Born in London, Reed studied art, photography and film before beginning his career at fabled magazine Tattler in 1980. He went on to work for The London Times, The New York Times, The L.A. Times, Vogue, Vanity Fair and The New Yorker. The artist is known for his love affair with shooting in film and has eschewed digital technology for this passion. For this show, Reed has gathered an assortment of whimsical yet intimate and witty portraits of some of the most iconic personalities and writers of modern day.

Reed is known for his humorous anecdotes about working with luminaries such as John Waters, John Le Carre and Gore Vidal, as well as for pushing the envelope with regard to shooting on location. He famously put Monty Python’s Michael Palin in a penguin suit and shot him in the penguin pool at London Zoo, after being repeatedly told by publicists that this would never happen (Palin of course was game for the adventure!)

“We wanted to show Dudley’s work because he is an iconic photographer who has produced a body of artistic and witty photographs of some of the most beloved personalities of our time,” say Tulip Gallery co-owner Jeffrey Millstein, himself a photographer (and the creator of Tulip’s eponymous photos that grace the wall of the gallery). “These photographs have never been exhibited in the US, and now Hudson Valley residents will have a chance to feast their eyes on these beauties for the first time. The work is also priced to sell, so the show is accessible for everyone.”

Millstein, along with partner Kim Cantine opened Tulip this past winter, testing the marketplace with their unique offerings of gifts, art and fresh flowers – and instantly filling a void in the local retail scene.

The store continues to morph and fine-tune its assortment of home décor and gifts and now offers an enormous variety of fresh tulips year-round – the only shop in the Hudson Valley to do so, via a relationship forged with a Dutch flower supplier.

Tulip Gallery is located at 6406 Montgomery Street in the village of Rhinebeck. http://www.tuliprhinebeck.com/ for more information.
