GIANNETTA SALON & SPA

by meg tohill

May 26, 2019

Newburgh native Janet Ruggiero knows Giannetta Salon & Spa is the true entrance to Beacon. “You cross the Newburgh–Beacon Bridge, the sun is shining and, suddenly, there it is,” she says. “I try to tell people how beautiful the salon is, but then they walk in the door and just say, ‘wow.’” Indeed, when you catch sight of the stand-alone brick building on North Avenue, it is clear this place is more than just your average salon; it’s a destination.

When you want to be pampered and treat yourself to a spa day or a new look, Janet’s many years of experience, along with her knowledge of current trends, will not let you down.

Giannetta’s is known throughout the Hudson Valley and beyond as the place to go for hair, makeup, and more. A peek at their online photo gallery shows their range of talent and expertise, with one photo after another of gorgeous hairstyles and faces. When you want to be pampered and treat yourself to a spa day or a new look, Janet’s many years of experience, along with her knowledge of current trends, will not let you down.

Janet’s journey to business owner and NYS-licensed esthetician began at a department store where she worked as a buying manager, quickly developing a talent in the cosmetics department. Focused on visual representation, Janet dealt primarily with the aesthetics of fine jewelry, fragrances, and makeup. “I always had this idea that I wanted to be a makeup artist, but maybe just a different kind of makeup artist,” says Janet. It was her attention to detail in working with cosmetic products that helped her realize her passion and finally say, “I love this.” Janet brought her experience from the department store into creating a high-end business. “We aren’t like mom-and-pop shops in the area,” she says. “We do, however, have a strong relationship with local businesses in the area. My girls eat out around the salon and constantly refer local haunts to our clientele.” From the bustling shops and beautiful scenery, to the vast array of other artists in the community, it was no wonder Janet stayed close to home and opened up her shop in the sweet town of Beacon.

“My girls will greet you at the door and bring you to your chair with refreshments, give you a consultation before even touching your head, then give you a head and shoulder massage, wash your hair, and give you the results you’ve been dreaming of.”

Her original vision of the salon aesthetic was vintage and old-world Italian, but, ultimately, the glamor screams Fifth Avenue. When customers walk in, “they can expect to be offered coffee, wine, tea, whatever their poison,” says Janet. “It’s the little extras that make us who we are. My girls will greet you at the door and bring you to your chair with refreshments, give you a consultation before even touching your head, then give you a head and shoulder massage, wash your hair, and give you the results you’ve been dreaming of.”

It was Janet’s attention to detail in working with cosmetic products that helped her realize her passion and finally say, “I love this.”

Giannetta’s treatment options merely begin with hair; if it’s full-on pampering you’re looking for, or just a quick picker-upper or two, they’ve got you covered. For skin enhancements, they offer micro-needling to improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of wrinkles, UVA skin analysis to see where the problem areas in your skin will be before they appear, and all kinds of facials, from deep pore to “vino therapy” merlot enzyme peels.

“For us, the most important thing is making sure that we address all of our clients’ concerns, and we will get them feeling beautiful.”

For beauty enhancement, they can spare you the hassle of applying your own makeup and give you a whole new look via airbrush or traditional makeup application, or add some lash extensions for something new, and they’d be happy to offer you an indulgent mani-pedi. “I’m known for brows,” Janet says. Her art is precise, making sure to blend and take into account bone structure when working with a client. Whether it’s tinting, waxing, or microblading, Janet and her crew know how to do it just right. And aside from the no-pain-no-gain treatments, there is a wide range of feel-good, relaxing, and healthful massage options, to help you feel beautiful from the inside out.

Hot stone and deep tissue massages are on the spa menu, in addition to acupuncture and spa packages for the ultimate facial and massage combo. If there is a new treatment out there, it’s likely that Gianetta’s will have it. A results-driven team, Janet values and encourages constant education. “The reason we stay so on-trend is because we are always taking classes,” she says.

“Before a girl gets on the floor, she must be licensed, and even through her work, the training never stops.” Despite the salon’s competitive nature, Janet admits she can’t deny the significance of word-of-mouth. “We put ourselves out there, but a lot of it is clients recommending us to others,” she says. “We have a lot of brides who come from the city to see us.”

“For us, the most important thing is making sure that we address all of our clients’ concerns, and we will get them feeling beautiful,” she says. Looking toward the salon’s future, Janet admits that she likes to think about focusing on slow, high-quality work, but she’s open to growth. “Will there be more Giannetta Salons?” she ponders. “Maybe.”
