Janette Bower, founder of 58Flora and Flora Beauty, was born and raised in the Hudson Valley. The city life called to her at age 22, and she relocated to New York, where she spent the next two decades honing her craft as a hair colorist. By age 28, Janette and partners opened a boutique hair salon in trendy SoHo. “It was a dream come true,” she says, recalling how she enjoyed cultivating relationships her “wonderful, inspiring” clients. Somewhere around this time, Janette’s interest in holistic beauty began to blossom.
It started slowly: Janette began creating aromatherapy blends to incorporate into her services. Intrigued, she enrolled in classes to further her knowledge in aromatherapy, perfumery, green medicine, and psychology, all disciplines that inform her work to this day. Janette believes the impulse to create runs in her blood: Her father was a chemist by trade, and she comes from a long line of women who always strived to learn and grow.
In October 2017, she launched 58Flora, a line of luxury hair, face, and body products with a focus on clean, quality ingredients and strong performance. All products—think elegant perfumes, soothing facial mists, and luxurious body oils—are free of synthetics, parabens, and phthalates and are cruelty-free, keeping in line with Janette’s ethos of causing no harm and promoting self-care.
Flora Beauty offers a variety of services, including acupuncture, waxing, facials, massage therapy, hair styling, and coloring.
Less than a year later, Janette opened Flora Beauty, a wellness apothecary and spa tucked away on John Street. Kingston’s upstate demographic and ease of access to the surrounding area drew her in, since she already felt the push to return to her country roots, and she couldn’t resist the quaintness of John Street. “It reminds me of SoHo or Paris,” she says. Her team offers a variety of services, including acupuncture, waxing, facials, massage therapy, hair styling, and coloring. What ties it all together is a passion for natural beauty products free of harmful ingredients, and a mind-body-soul approach to wellness—two core values Janette says her clients at Flora Beauty also hold close to heart.
All products—think elegant perfumes, soothing facial mists, and luxurious body oils—are cruelty-free.
Moving forward, Janette plans to continue expanding 58Flora’s product line and the studio at Flora Beauty, all the while staying true to her original vision of creating of a natural, holistic sanctuary right here in the Hudson Valley. “I’ve been on a long journey to get to this point,” she adds, “so I’m extremely grateful for opportunities and the passion that drives me to create.”
