The Hudson Valley String Quartet returns to Unison Arts Center on Sunday August 16th at 2pm with a program of Romantic repertoire, performing beautiful music by Mozart, Grieg and Borodin.
Jeanne Fox, cellist of the quartet, talked about the reason behind this program. "String Quartet music started during the time of Mozart and Haydn. We love playing their music of course, but we also love what came after. Despite it's name, the Romantic Era in music was not just about beauty and romance. Romanticism arose in opposition to the rarefied air of classical music and the aristocracy that supported it. The industrial revolution created a growing middle class who wanted to hear popular styles as well as their traditional native folk music reflected in concert music. Performing this music gives us a glimpse into what people were feeling during this pivotal time in our creative history."
